MS Michigan Man 64 Podcast

WARRIOR #6 - Juliann - MS WARRIOR

Episode Notes

Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepares us to take everything on!

Today I'm talking with Juliann, diagnosed with MS at 15 years old back in 2014. Her symptoms started with hand numbness while playing guitar, then progressed to leg dragging while pitching softball. After seeing her pediatrician who initially thought it was a pinched nerve, Juliann's mom got her an MRI that showed abnormal results and she was sent to the hospital immediately.

We talk about why mental health should be addressed at diagnosis - Juliann turned down therapy at 15 but wishes she'd said yes. We discuss losing friends after diagnosis, hiding the disease in high school, and eventually opening up about it through songwriting. Juliann shares how Montel Williams responded to her on Twitter with a quote that still carries her through bad days: "You have MS and it will never have you unless you let it."

We talk about her incredible husband Garrett who stood by her through her worst flare and pushes her wheelchair when needed. Juliann is also mom to Mason, a three-year-old autistic warrior, and we discuss the fight to get his diagnosis and dealing with judgment in public when he's having sensory episodes.

FAM is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to mental health and assisting former Michigan team members with life's struggles after football, whether they are mental or physical. Division 1 football at the level we played it is brutal, and not all players come out of it in one piece. Visit www.michiganfootballalumni.org for more info and to make a tax-deductible donation.
