MS Michigan Man 64 Podcast

WARRIOR #31 - Dhata - MS BADASS

Episode Notes

Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepares us to take everything on!

Today I'm talking with US Army vet, Dhata, from Georgia diagnosed with MS in 2008 after experiencing numbness and tingling in 2005 during a two mile Army fitness test and his legs turned to jelly. Dhata also had just been bitten by a spider so his first thought was a reaction to the spider bite. After a few weeks of researching the symptoms he realized it probably wasn't from the bite so he started to see specialists that finally told him he had MS.

Dhata explains how he felt elation from being told he had a chronic disease because he finally had an answer after three years of seeing doctors.

We discussed how the diagnosis affects our mental health and how it's not addressed at the diagnosis.

Dhata talks about his DMT journey and how he struggled with finding one he could tolerate and how he participated in an auto injector study for Avonex when it first came out.

In 2011 Dhata stopped working because of MS and filed for disability as an auditor. He then started to take care of his health and got dental implant surgery because of periodontal disease he suffered with. Post surgery within 6-12 months Dhata started to see amazing improvements that he was able to go back to work.

We also talk about how Dhata investigated gut health after going through a gastric sleeve procedure to improve his health. He explains how he dove deep into researching H pylori and the effects on MS.

Dhata talks about his research paper encouraged to get published by his gastric sleeve surgeon Dr Charlie Proctor that is currently going through peer review to be published.

A ton of great information from an MSer that has done the research on his own journey with MS.
