Running Through MS: Cheryl's Inspiring Marathon Journey

Episode Notes

An inspiring conversation about resilience and advocacy in MS.

Cheryl's story is a powerful testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2006, she didn't let the condition define her. Instead, she continued to pursue her passion for running, completing marathons even after her diagnosis.

## The Diagnosis Journey

Cheryl's symptoms began after an impressive marathon performance, with her arm feeling numb and painful. Initially dismissed as a sports injury, it took her ten months and multiple doctors before she received a definitive MS diagnosis. "I wish I didn’t have that whole ten-month span where MS was getting worse. I could have started on DMT ten months prior," she reflects.

## Advocating for Oneself

Navigating the healthcare system can be daunting, especially when faced with a chronic illness. Cheryl emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy, recounting how she pushed to see a specialist after her initial neurologist hesitated to diagnose her. "I'm just one of the hardest things for me is advocating for myself. I always say yes to everything. I don’t want any contradictions," she shared.

## Support from Loved Ones

Cheryl's journey was also shaped by her supportive husband, Brian, who learned alongside her and encouraged her to pursue her passion for running despite her diagnosis. "He supported me through all of my crazy ideas running these marathons," she said.

## The Role of Exercise

When discussing treatment options, Cheryl highlighted the importance of staying active. "I felt like I needed to take the daily injection because at least I'm doing something every day. I'm helping my body every day." Her experience underscores the evolving understanding of exercise as a critical part of living well with MS.

## Closing Thoughts

Cheryl's story exemplifies the strength and perseverance of those living with chronic illnesses.
